How to use it

  1. Type the letters you have. Order does not matter — garden, ranged and dagner all give the same answers.
  2. Add a ? for each blank. A blank stands in for any letter. Two is the sensible limit; past that nearly everything matches.
  3. Press Solve. The first time takes a moment while the dictionary downloads. After that it is instant, and it keeps working if your connection drops.
  4. Read longest first. Results are grouped by length with the longest at the top, because in most games and most puzzles that is the one you actually wanted.

What counts as an anagram

Strictly, an anagram uses every letter of the original exactly once — listen and silent, or a gentleman and elegant man. That is what the Use every letter box gives you.

Most of the time, though, people searching for an anagram solver are stuck on a word puzzle and want any word the letters make, not just the perfect rearrangement. So that is the default. Tick the box when you want the strict answer and leave it alone when you want help.

Questions people ask

How does the anagram solver work?
Type your letters and press Solve. It checks every word in a 172,000-word English dictionary against the letters you gave it and shows you the ones that fit, longest first. It runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and it works just as well offline once the page has loaded.
Does it use all my letters, or just some of them?
Both, and it shows you everything. By default it finds every word you can make from any of your letters, which is what you want when you are stuck in a word game. If you only want words that use every single letter — a true anagram — tick 'Use every letter'.
Can I use a blank tile or a wildcard?
Yes. Type a question mark for each blank and it will try every letter of the alphabet in that position. Two blanks is the sensible limit — more than that and almost everything matches, which is not a useful answer.
Which dictionary does it use?
ENABLE, a 172,000-word public-domain English word list. It is the list Words With Friends was built from, so if a word is accepted in most word games it is in here. Words shorter than three letters and longer than eight are left out.
Is it free, and does anything get uploaded?
It is free, there is no sign-up, and nothing is uploaded. The dictionary is downloaded to your browser the first time you solve something and everything after that happens on your own device.
Why can it not find a word I know is real?
Three usual reasons: the word is shorter than three or longer than eight letters, it is a proper noun (names are not in the dictionary), or it needs a letter you did not type. A small number of rude words are also left out on purpose, because this is a general-audience site.
